SEEK THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN FIRST

Jesus climbed up a tall hill to be seen by everyone in the large crowd. They gathered around Him as He taught about the kingdom of heaven. He instructed everyone in the crowd to stop worrying about the cares of this world. He told them to not worry about their life. He also told them to not worry about the necessities of life, such as food and clothing.

But, Jesus did not only point out what people need to change in their life. He also pointed to the solutions that could free everyone from the challenges they faced inside themselves. In this gathering, Jesus led His audience from an uneasy place of worry to the promise of Father God by stating,

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need” (Matt. 6:33 NLT).

The promise of the Father God covered every need in life. From that moment on, everyone present in the crowd could begin a new worry-free lifestyle. By taking Father God at His word, they could exercise newfound freedom to seek the kingdom of God above all the cares of this world. Likewise, while trusting Father God to take care of their needs, they were free to seek Him first in the process of getting every one of them met.

Seek the kingdom of heaven first

The New American Standard Bible translation captures the promise of Father God in this way, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matt. 6:33 NASB). In other words, seek the kingdom of heaven first and pursue a virtuous relationship with Father God. Then, everything we need will be given to us. Father God’s invitation to seek the kingdom of heaven first is offered to us as well. The question is, do we have a willingness to seek to the kingdom of heaven before everything else in life?

Beginning a relationship with Father God is by far the best step toward seeking His kingdom. That being the case, people may not be ready to pursue a relationship with Him as of right now. In the meantime, we can start seeking the kingdom of heaven around us. Seek the kingdom of heaven and take notice of how Father God is at work in our life or the lives of others. Below is a couple of examples of how to seek the kingdom of heaven.

Seek the kingdom of heaven through the life of Jesus in the Bible.

Study the life of Jesus in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Jesus prayed the kingdom of heaven into this world. Father God answered by opening heaven to Jesus. Consequently, the kingdom of heaven mightily manifested wherever Jesus did His Father’s will. As a result of doing Father God’s will, Jesus was able to fully live out His heavenly calling. Following the example of Jesus, we can learn how to grow in a rich relationship with Father God and fulfill our heavenly calling.

Seek the kingdom of heaven at local churches.

Visit several local churches. Look around for heaven in the different church settings. Take notice of how Father God may be at work in the lives of members and visitors in the church. Also, befriend anyone that stands out as possible support in the discovery process of seeking the kingdom of heaven. Lastly, be sure to participate in outreach functions that encourage believers to declare the kingdom of heaven is present and partner with Father God to meet people’s needs.

Father God’s promise is an invitation to present all of our cares to Him. Love is His motivation. He tells us that everything we need will be given to us for a reason. The reason is to get all of our attention. The energy wrapped up in worry takes our attention from off of Father God. He tells us to seek the kingdom of heaven first because He wants our full attention when we receive everything He gives us. Then, we will be astonished as we fully take in the amazing ways He wisely provides for all of our needs.
